Concert for Curtains 19th November at St Mary’s Church, Motcombe

Concert for curtains

Some 17 years ago when the North Dorset Women’s Refuge was opened, there were curtains at all the windows, in the corridors and in the flats. After this time with the hard work they have done, it is time for change.

Working with a local supplier, the Friends of the Refuge are buying new curtains with fabric chosen by the current residents. All the flats will have the same fabric and the communal areas and passage ways will have a different style. The estimate is generous and allows for alterations to readymade curtains as well as a 10% discount for which we are so very grateful.

Curtain poles will be used rather than tracks and they will be put up by the Spectrum maintenance team: again, our gratitude for that which is saving us a considerable sum and no little anxiety.

On Sunday afternoon 19th November, we are presenting a return of the Gravellers, a men’s group of a capella singers with Rose, Mary and Thyme – by popular demand

They will be at St Mary’s Motcombe at 3.00pm on Sunday 19th November.

Tickets £10.00 from the Village Shop or on the door include afternoon tea.

Please do come and support us as we raise funds for these essential curtains

New Treasurer Required!

After 10 years in the role, our treasurer Fiona Johnson has decided to step aside due to work commitments. We are looking to replace her as soon as possible.  The job is voluntary and involves attending each committee meeting which are held every two months, banking receipts and making payments.  The annual accounts also need preparing and filing with the Charity Commission along with completing the Annual Return. The ability to use WordPress to update the website occasionally would be helpful too.

For an informal chat about the role, you can call Fiona on 07962 532079 or email  This is a lovely role that directly benefits the women and children in the refuge and you can see your time and effort making a difference.

Christmas Update 2015

We had a wonderful response for the women and families in the Refuge over Christmas.  Many thanks to all of you who donated gifts and those who gave their time to wrap presents, sing carols and help in any other way.  We have also received donations from various groups over the festive period and we thank you for thinking of us at this time.

Projects for 2015 and beyond

Friends of North Dorset Women’s Refuge are committed to assisting with on-going improvements to the Refuge.

Our projects this year are:

1. The garden

We have had two designers looking at the outside space and are waiting for their ideas and inspirations.

2. Soft Play Room for under 5’s

Having done the playroom and a teenagers chill out room, the current requirement is for a facility for the younger children.

We are waiting for a quotation and look forward to getting this space organized very soon.

Happy New Year 2015

Another year has flown by and we are already half way through January 2014. Christmas at the refuge was a positive experience with lots of presents for the children. We have had some wonderful donations both in gifts and money from our supporters over the period. Thank you very much to everyone who has added something to make other people’s lives better.

Our aims and goals for 2014

A Happy New Year to everyone.  We had a hugely successful christmas with lots of presents, hampers and gifts for everyone. Thank you so much for all your support with help, toys donations of presents and donations of money.  At Friends of North Dorset Women’s Refuge, we give all our time for free and don’t claim any expenses for our running around costs. You can be assured that all the money you donate goes directly on our charity aims.  Our charity aims are to help the women and children at the refuge, and helping them to move on from the refuge. We also spend time on raising awareness about domestic violence.

Friends of North Dorset Women’s Refuge can come and speak to your group about the work that we do for the refuge.  We don’t charge anything for doing this. Please get in touch with us via the contact form or call Sara or Viv if you are interested in hearing our message about the refuge.
