There is an excellent comedy night at The Exchange in Sturminster Newton in 15th March 2014 and some of the proceeds will be coming to Friends of North Dorset Women’s Refuge. Please support our supporters!
The popular bi-annual comedy night returns in the capable hands of compere,Geoff Whiting, described by The Radio Times 2013 as ‘One of Britain’s funniest men.
Opening the show Gary Colman, an army doctor for 14 years, shares his discontented genius with you as he considers the big issues of life.
We have two acts in our open slot-Tim O’Connor and Canadian, Chris Betts.
Our headline act, Jamie Bowen’s career has seen him perform all over Australia, in London, Edinburgh and Singapore as well as having extensively toured the length of NZ several times over. Mixing stand-up, story telling, random banter, music and anything else that springs to mind on the night, Jamie has proved to be one of NZ’s most exciting and creative young comedians!
All proceeds from this event will go to the Sudanese Community Development Project in Cairo and the Friends of North Dorset’s Women Refuge.
This show is not suitable for children and acts may be subject to change on the night.
- Date:Saturday, 15 March 2014

Friends of North Dorset Women’s Refuge pays for any families who want to go and see the pantomime.
Of all North Dorset, Shaftesbury has a lovely little theatre that puts on a good show every year. This year is Aladdin and we will be offering to pay for tickets and transport to the production.
The link to the pantomime is above.
We have had our final planning meeting for Christmas already. You may not be aware, but December and January are the peak times for referrals. This is probably due to women not wanting to break the family up for Christmas but decide on a fresh start for January.
Friends of North Dorset Women’s Refuge try and make Christmas a special as possible for the families.
- Presents for the children
- Pamper Hampers for the women
- Christmas food hampers stocked with long life goods for each flat
- A christmas carol singing session
- A party for residents
- Pantomime tickets
If anyone is looking to donate items for Christmas we would be really grateful to receive them.
The cut off for delivery is 16th December 2013. Even if you miss this, we will always put things in our present cupboard as we like to give the women and chidren gifts on their birthdays.
I am based in Shaftesbury so can collect or be a drop off point for donations.
Many thanks and Merry Christmas
Just to remind everyone that the coffee morning for Friends of North Dorset Women’s Refuge is on Thursday 27th June from 10.30 to 12.00 at Grove Farm House in Melbury. We have changed the date ( the original date was 20th June) so please come a week later! We look forward to seeing you the North Dorset Refuge Friend’s Coffee Morning then.
This is to give notification that our AGM is going to be held at Grove Farm House at 18.30 on Monday 13th May 2013. We will be electing our committee and approving the final accounts. This meeting is open to everyone but we do need to know in advance so please R.S.V.P to our Secretary Viv Johnson on 01747 851780 if you wish to attend. We would also welcome new committee members – please call Sara Jacson for an informal chat on 01747 853688 if you are interested. The committee meets once a month apart from August and the meetings generally are about 90 minutes in length. We tend to hold one coffee morning per year and a major fundraiser every other year. Christmas involves present wrapping for a morning and then the occasional ad hoc things that come up. If anyone has good ideas for fundraising, we would like to hear from you!
The accounts are available now for anyone who is interested. Please contact Fiona Johnson – email is best – firstname.lastname@example.org and the accounts can be sent electronically. If you prefer to call, the number is 07962 532079.
The child support worker is having great success with her cooking classes. Becca offers a whole meal in the sessions so the children learn how to make delicious, nutritious food. Friends also purchased some cook books at the end of last year which have been very popular. We left an assortment in each flat and the residents can take them with them (if they chose), when they move on.
The staff and residents at the Refuge would like to start doing some gardening. The area outside the Refuge is a bit of a concrete jungle, so raised beds and lots of pots are going to be needed to add some colour and aroma to the garden. We are hoping to get some partners to help us – we will keep the website updated with the latest news!
At Friends of North Dorset Women’s Refuge, we aim to put on 2-3 events a year to raise the profile of our charity and raise money. We are always short of helpers to come and set up events – we really could do with some volunteers who can shift tables and chairs. If you or anyone you know would be able to spare an hour every now and again, that would be really really helpful. Contact Sara Jacson on 01747 853688.
Our annual coffee morning is taking place on Thursday 27th June at Grove Farm House in Melbury Abbas. Hosted by our Chairman Sara Jacson and her husband Edward, come and have some coffee, fabulous home made cake and a wander through the gardens. We will have a produce stall, book exchange and raffle so there is plenty of opportunity to help out the Friends of North Dorset Women’s Refuge whilst having a good time.
Last year the event was called off due to the non stop rain. We really hope this won’t happen again, but if it does, updates will be on the website.
Friends of North Dorset Women’s Refuge would like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who so generously donated over Christmas. We had loads of toiletries and presents. It makes such a big impact on the residents at the Refuge knowing that people do care about their lives. Thank you all so much.
